Weight-Activated vs Caged Bird Feeders: Which Actually Works?

There are only two real mechanisms in squirrel-proof bird feeding. One shuts the food away when something heavy arrives. One puts a barrier around the food that only small bodies fit through. Everything else is a variation on those two ideas, or a pole accessory that tries to stop the animal reaching the feeder at all.

Most buying advice treats them as interchangeable. They are not. A weight-activated feeder sorts your garden by mass. A caged feeder sorts it by body size. Those are different measurements, they let different animals through, and they fail in completely different ways.

Get the diagnosis wrong and you spend £30 solving a problem you did not have. This guide sets the two mechanisms against each other honestly, including where ours falls short, and tells you which one answers your particular garden. Which is better, a weight-activated or a caged bird feeder?

Weight-activated feeders are better against squirrels, rats and pigeons, because those animals weigh 338 g or more and mass is what closes the ports. Caged feeders are better against large birds such as starlings, which at just under 80 g are far too light for any spring and are excluded by body size instead. Hard gardens need both.

The one idea that decides everything: what is your filter measuring?

A feeder cannot know what species has landed on it. It can only measure something physical and act on it. There are two things worth measuring.

Mass. A weight-activated feeder hangs its perches on springs. A bird lands, the spring barely moves, the port stays open. Something heavy lands, the spring compresses, and a shroud slides down over the feeding port. The food is behind metal. Nothing is trapped and nothing is hurt. The animal gets off, the spring returns, and the port opens again for the next bird.

Body size. A caged feeder puts a wire surround around the feeding tube. Birds small enough to fit through the gaps hop in and feed. Anything wider than the gap stays outside looking in. The gap never changes. It is a fixed aperture, set at the factory.

Here is the sentence the whole category turns on. Mass and body size do not sort the garden the same way. An animal can be heavy and narrow. An animal can be light and wide. Every strength and every failure below falls out of that one mismatch.

The weight ladder, with real numbers

Before comparing mechanisms it is worth seeing what is actually in your garden, by weight.

What this means: Mass separates squirrels from small garden birds cleanly, because the two groups do not overlap and are not close. Body size does not, because a young squirrel is narrow while an adult is not. That is why a spring is the right tool against heavy raiders and the wrong tool against a starling, which at just under 80 g sits far below the band a squirrel occupies.

Read the bottom of that squirrel range again, because it is the number that makes weight activation work. The lightest adult grey squirrel in the published range is 338g. That is still more than four times a starling and over thirty times a blue tit. There is a wide, empty band between the heaviest small garden bird and the lightest adult squirrel. A spring set anywhere inside that band separates them cleanly, every single landing, with no judgement required.

Body size gives you nothing so clean. Squirrels are flexible, and a young one is a great deal narrower than an adult.

Weight-activated vs caged: the comparison table

How a weight-activated feeder works, step by step

A weight-activated bird feeder works by mounting its perches on calibrated springs. Birds weighing between 11 g and around 80 g are too light to compress the spring, so the feeding port stays open. Anything from 338 g upwards compresses it and a shroud slides across the port. Here is the full sequence.

  1. A bird lands on the perch. At 11g to around 80g there is not enough force to compress the spring meaningfully. The port stays open and the bird feeds. Nothing about the feeder changes for small birds.
  2. Something heavy lands. A squirrel at 338g upwards, a rat, or a wood pigeon at 450g. The perch drops under the load.
  3. The shroud slides over the port. The food is now behind a metal panel. There is no trap, no snap and no shock. The animal simply cannot reach seed.
  4. The animal leaves. This is the part people underestimate. A squirrel that gets nothing does not keep trying forever at that spot. It reads the feeder as empty.
  5. The spring returns and the port reopens. The next blue tit feeds normally. The filter resets on every single landing, which is why it does not degrade over a season the way a deterrent does.

The honest bit: this is a mechanism, not a promise. It sorts by mass and only by mass. It has nothing to say about a bird that is light enough to feed freely, which is exactly why we sell a cage accessory as well.

How a caged feeder works, and what the RSPB says about it

A cage or guardian is simpler. A wire surround stands off from the feeding tube. Small birds pass through the gaps to reach the ports. Wider animals cannot.

For large birds this is genuinely the right tool, and it is the tool we recommend for starlings in our guide to stopping starlings and pigeons taking over the feeder. A starling is far too light for any spring. Size is the only handle you have on it.

Against squirrels, the category's own authority is candid. The RSPB's bird feeder buying guide states:

"A guardian around your feeder can help to deter squirrels (however, in order to make the food accessible to birds, it's not possible to make anything fully squirrel 'proof'). Small or juvenile squirrels are able to squeeze through even quite narrow gaps."

That is not a rival talking down a competing mechanism. That is the RSPB describing the physics of its own product category. Its guardians are described as "resistant to larger birds and adult squirrels". The word doing the work in that sentence is adult.

And juveniles are not a rare event. The Woodland Trust records that females may produce two litters of three to four young a year, and that young squirrels "will leave the nest and begin foraging for solid foods after around two months". Twice a year, a fresh cohort of small, narrow, extremely motivated squirrels starts looking for food. They are narrow enough for the gap and heavy enough to empty a feeder.

A weight port does not care how narrow they are. It only asks what they weigh.

Do caged bird feeders keep out baby squirrels?

No. The RSPB states plainly that small or juvenile squirrels "are able to squeeze through even quite narrow gaps", and that nothing made accessible to birds can be fully squirrel-proof. Cage gaps cannot be narrowed to stop them without also shutting out the small birds the cage exists to feed.

That is the trap in the cage design, and it is a limit of the idea rather than a manufacturing fault. The gap has to stay wide enough for the small birds the cage exists to feed. A grey squirrel that left the nest two months ago is not much wider than those birds.

Where weight-activated feeders fail

Light raiders. A starling at just under 80g (Woodland Trust) sits nowhere near the closing band. A flock will feed all afternoon and springs will not stop them. If starlings are your problem, weight is the wrong filter and we will tell you so.

Birds light enough or clever enough to work around the perch. Weight alone does not answer a bird that reaches in rather than settling. Bash-to-spill, the tactic nobody warns you about. This is the complaint we hear most about large birds, and magpies are the worst for it. A magpie that cannot get a beak into a port does not give up. It bashes and shakes the feeder until seed falls out, then feeds off the ground underneath. Squirrels learn the same trick. A weight port on its own does nothing about it, because the bird never needed the port. Where caged feeders fail

Juvenile squirrels. Covered above, in the RSPB's own words.

Rats. A rat's body is built for narrow gaps. A cage sized for a small garden bird is not an obstacle. If rats are the problem, read our guide to stopping rats stealing bird food.

The birds you wanted. A gap that stops a starling stops a blackbird, a song thrush and, depending on the cage, a great spotted woodpecker. Plenty of people fit a cage in October and spend the winter wondering where the blackbirds went.

Spill, and the birds that cause it deliberately. A cage manages who reaches the port. It has nothing to say about seed hitting the ground, which is what feeds pigeons and rats underneath. Worse, a large bird locked out by a cage often turns to shaking the feeder to knock seed down instead, and the cage does not stop that either. Only the feeder's own internal design can.

Red-listed birds. Starlings are on the UK Red List after a 57% decline between 1995 and 2023, according to the RSPB. Caging one feeder is fine. Caging every feeder in the garden shuts a declining species out of your plot entirely. Feed them somewhere else instead. And under UK law, all wild birds, their eggs and nests are protected.

Where pole baffles fail

A baffle is the third option people ask about, and it belongs in a different category. It does not filter anything. It is a physical obstacle on a pole, designed to stop an animal climbing to the feeder in the first place.

On a free-standing pole, well clear of fences, sheds, branches and walls, a baffle works well and costs little. Off a pole it does nothing at all. If your feeder hangs from a branch or a bracket, there is nothing for a baffle to sit on.

The honest limit is the clearance. A baffle only works if the animal cannot launch past it from something nearby, and squirrels are better at judging that than people expect.

Which one should you buy?

If squirrels are the problem

Buy weight-activated. This is the case the mechanism was built for, and the mass gap between a squirrel and a small bird is wide enough that the filter is decisive rather than probabilistic. A cage will hold adults and lose to the juveniles twice a year.

If rats are the problem

Buy weight-activated, and fix the ground. Rats are heavy enough to close ports and narrow enough to walk through a cage. The ports also stay shut overnight when nothing light is landing, which is when rats work. Then remove the spill, because a rat comes for the floor before it comes for the feeder.

If starlings, magpies, jackdaws or parakeets are the problem
