Frequently asked questions

Is the peanut PestOff 3.0 really squirrel proof?

Yes. Dual all-metal baffles, an anti-cling ring and spring-loaded ports that close under a squirrel's weight block squirrels from every angle, so only small birds can feed.

What food does it take?

It takes peanuts, mealworms or suet pellets. The food is not included.

How much does it hold?

It holds 2 litres — fill once and watch for days. It measures 19 × 19 × 54 cm and weighs 0.7 kg.

How is it different from the seed version?

It's the same squirrel-proof PestOff 3.0 feeder set up for peanuts, mealworms and suet pellets instead of mixed seed and sunflower hearts.

Will small garden birds use it?

Yes. The ports stay open for lightweight songbirds, and stainless steel perches give them a comfortable grip; only heavier animals trigger the ports to close.

Where should I hang it?

Hang it at least 45 cm (18 inches) from walls, fences and branches squirrels could leap from, for the best results.

How do I clean it?

It comes apart tool-free for cleaning with warm soapy water and a bottle brush; rinse and air-dry before refilling.

Very nice and easy to use

I bought 1 feeder and it worked so well I brought another. Now the squirrels, parakeets and jackdaws cannot get the food. They are also very easy to clean which is so important just now with the nasty Tricomonos disease still present.

Great product. It looks so elegant. I can’t stop looking at it.

Mary Alexander · 5/5 stars · Verified buyer · August 2026

Didn't take long for our birds to figure it out. Was quite funny watching a few until they found the perch. Usually have a constant stream of all sorts. Our robin was very quick to get it. Big birds have given up. Squirrel gave it one try yesterday...foiled. So very pleased with it

tony philbrick · 5/5 stars · Verified buyer · August 2026

Arrived well packaged. Assembly for the PestOff bird feeder and starling proof cage was easy with clear instructions.
Also got the Bird butter feeder which was easy to fit, was surprised at the size but not disappointed.
All the items were of good quality, will have to see how they stand up to the winter months otherwise so far pleased with the purchase.

I have a few different feeders from roamwild and they have been great. Always had the blue tits and great tits and other birds but for the first time living here for just over ten year's I had two goldfinches on my feeder and I was over the moon.

We've got two of these - sunflower hearts, and nyjer seeds versions - and highly recommend both, build quality and functionality is exceptional. Both feeders were adopted almost immediately by tits & finches, with the occasional spotted wood pecker, and nuthatch, while pigeons and doves keep the lawn below clear. It's reassuring to watch the crows, parakeets and squirrels raids thwarted.

The feeder is very nicely made but sadly the birds don't like the pestoff plastic guard and won't use it, I removed the guard and they were on it straight away, now all the feed falls on the floor and the pigeons eat it just like my previous feeder.

Brilliant products, does the job. Good service.

It’s the best feeder to feed the little birds only.

We decided to try this feeder as we got a lot of pigeons, starlings and magpies throwing food everywhere, bit sceptical due to price, however put it next to a water bowl and had birds on it within a few days (sunflower hearts), also the goldfinches we had tried to attract for years are finally in the garden.

Love my feeder, it took just over a week for the birds to use it but now they know how to, they are feeding all the time.

After watching the local crows treat my old feeders like an all-you-can-eat buffet, I finally bought a Roamwild PestOff Bird Feeder 3. It's not the cheapest feeder around, but it does exactly what it promises. The crows have been outsmarted, the smaller birds are happy, and I'm no longer pouring expensive sunflower hearts onto the ground for every passing pest. It took the birds a little while to get used to it, but now it's one of the busiest spots in the garden. I'm so pleased with it that I'll be buying a second one when I get back from holiday. Expensive? Mmm. Worth it? Absolutely.

Absolutely brilliant feeder finished in Aurora Blue. The Tits didn't waste any time in feeding straight swap for old feeder. Its stopped the jackdaws but i feed them in another part of garden. Definitely worth it i totally recommend this roam 3.0

The garden birds love this feeder, however, the squirrel has figured out how to wrap its body around it and feed without activating the weight trap and although seed drop is reduced, there is still plenty of seed drop for ratty and friends. Very limited to what seed you can fill it with too.
A great idea in principle but the advertising is misleading.

Hi Jacqueline, thank you for your feedback. We're glad the garden birds enjoy the feeder, but sorry to hear about the squirrel issue. If the squirrel is accessing the feeder without triggering the ports this would indicate the feeder is hanging incorrectly and too close to a vertical object.

To keep your songbirds safe and the squirrels out, your PestOff feeder just needs a little breathing room.

Make sure there’s at least 45cm (18 inches) of space between your feeder and any nearby pole, fence, wall or tree branch. This is because if it’s too close, squirrels can simply lean in and grab seed without triggering the clever weight-sensitive ports.

As we all know squirrels are amazingly agile but will give up if something is hard work with little reward. Hence hang the feeder with a long hanging bracket at least 18' long (we have a nice range of purposefully built brackets which are viewable on our website). The squirrel climbs the pole and then can not access the feeder so easily, if it does the ports close. A lot of effort for little reward and it moves onto something else.

Great feeder, birds took to it very quickly but I’m finding the suet pellets and sometimes mealworms block the feeding holes. It’s not put me off buying a second one for fat balls.

I bought the Roamwild PestOff Bird Feeder 3.0 and it was delivered within a few days. Instructions for assembly were easy to follow. I wasn't sure how long it would take for the birds to get used to the feeder but just 24 hours later there were two goldfinches feeding. 48 hours later there are goldfinches, great tits, bullfinch, coal tit and a chaffinch. I haven't seen a chaffinch in my garden for a good few years so I'm delighted. I've still to see a Robin, blue tit or sparrow at the feeder but I'm sure they will adapt. We've had squirrels wreck past feeders and pigeons fly into other feeders to scatter seed. Neither squirrel or pigeon have bothered with this feeder. I am so so happy with this feeder, I wish I'd bought it sooner. It is worth every penny. Well done Roamwild

I have the older version 2. The birds love it, but after a year or so of trying one of the squirrels does too. With a bit of contortion this squirrel manages to feed without actuating the spring-loaded drop down to close off the access vent. I checked the spring and it still works as designed. This squirrel is ingenious and somehow manages to get a grip on the underside of the feeder.

I also find the tall version is too tall as eventually the food at the bottom will get wet and jam up, defeating the need to load so much into it at one time. To clear the wet food it needs to be cleaned often in poor weather. We often get horizontal rain where I live up on a hillside in Wales. A more sheltered location may not have this issue.

Whilst this may sound negative, I'm happy with the feeder when you compare it with others I have. It has defeated most of the squirrels and all the larger birds such as Magpies.
